The Durango Chamber Music Academy was created by 3rd Ave. Arts in conjunction with the Durango Chamber Music Festival to provide the opportunity for young musicians to learn to play chamber music in a comfortable, nurturing setting and to encourage meeting friends with similar interests. Students of stringed instruments are invited to participate.

Ensemble music is unique because performers must expand their awareness beyond their own instrument and work on listening, balancing, leading and following the other instruments. Performers work together as a team and do everything possible to ensure that everyone plays well. Leadership skills are developed because each member of the group becomes the conductor at different moments.

We believe in honoring the special voice in all musicians. We coach, encourage, and applaud all groups equally, from high-level ensembles to those with participants who are just starting to play chamber music. Our goal is to use the tools of coaching and performance to build confidence and ability in each student.

Each day of the Academy begins with a half-hour Durango Chamber Music Festival concert. Parents are encourage to purchase a Parent's Pass and attend with their children. Class time is divided into ensemble playing with coaching, general music, performance practice and large ensemble rehearsal. All Academy events take place at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 910 E. 3rd Ave. in Durango.

The Durango Chamber Music Academy is presented by 3rd Ave. Arts, a non-profit whose mission is to present artistic and cultural events and arts education opportunities that enrich the fabric of our community. Learn more at www.3rdAveArts.org.
